That’s right, ABC has ordered “Dr. Ken” for their fall line up, a show based on the “Community” actor’s time as a physician. Ken Jeong is also an executive producer on the upcoming comedy series. Suzy Nakamura will play Jeong’s wife, and the rest of the cast includes: Tisha Campbell-Martin, Dave Foley, Jonathan Slavin, Albert Tsai, and Krista Marie Yu.
This means that ABC will have doubled the number of programs starring an Asian American family, with the renewal of Fresh Off The Boat – a show based on celebrity chef Eddie Huang’s memoir of the same title.
What a way to celebrate Asian-Pacific American Heritage month, am I right? If there’s any show that I will actively keep up with week to week, it’s “Fresh Off The Boat.” I’m so excited to add another show to that list, and so much more excited that there will be more Asian American faces on mainstream media.
I don’t know if other networks will start to follow in ABC’s more diverse direction, but I’m extremely excited for the potential. I think we still have a long way to go before more Asian talent is cast just like any other person, but I think putting more Asian faces in front of audiences is a step in the right direction.
